It’s hard to remember a time when I wasn’t obsessed with books and movies and art and music, sports and everything else cool that matters. I’m always into something, fascinated by what I’ve just read, seen or heard. And since there is never a shortage of amazing work waiting to be appreciated, new and old, the excitement never abates. So I’m going to use this space to share with you what’s got my attention in books, and the arts and culture, and I’m eager to know what we’ll end up learning together.

About Me:

I’m a professional writer, editor, interviewer, and magazine archivist. Also: incorrigible enthusiast, cheerleader, natural pollinator of creative connections, and a conduit to good shit.

My working life began in the movie business, in editing rooms where I apprenticed for Ken Burns (Baseball) and Woody Allen (Everybody Says I Love You), and served as an assistant film editor for the Coen brothers (The Big Lebowski), and Hype Williams (Belly).

In 2002, I launched Bronx Banter, one of the first blogs devoted to the New York Yankees. By 2004, I was a contributing baseball writer for SI.com, and two years later published my first book, Stepping Up, a YA biography of baseball player Curt Flood.

I had thoughts of being a sportswriter yet soon learned that the writers were more accessible—and usually more interesting—than the athletes they covered. So I got to know and enjoy writers and editors, which proved to be a trailhead into the world of magazine archiving, which I began on the Banter.

In 2013, I created an archival blog for Deadspin, titled The Stacks, which reprinted great journalism from the pre-digital era—with permission and blessings from the author or their estates. I did a version of The Stacks at The Daily Beast concentrating on the arts and culture before creating a standalone site, The Stacks Reader.

It was this work that brought me to Esquire in 2016 to edit Esquire Classic, the magazine’s digital archive.

My writing has been featured in Esquire, Air Mail, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, and Men’s Health; I’ve edited six books including Lasting Yankee Stadium Memories, The Ocean is Closed: Journalistic Investigations, and What Makes Sammy Jr. Run?
